Local American History (photography)
Artist: George Jacobi
Year: 2007
Date of Action: February-March 2007
Region: North America
Location: Mansfield, Connecticut
Subject: Political/Economic/Social Opinion
Medium: Photography
Confronting Bodies: Mansfield Community Center staff
Description of Artwork: The piece was a collage of photographs, which incorporated pictures of the American flag, a churchyard exhibit that noted the Iraq war's death toll, and a local graveyard.
The Incident: The collage was put up for display at Mansfield's Community Center, but elicited complaints from several of the community members, including one Air Force veteran, for what they perceived as its anti-war content. The collage was then removed. The artist also removed another of his pieces that had not elicited complaints out of protest.
Results of Incident: After protest from the town's inhabitants and the NCAC, the town reversed its decision, apologized to both Jacobi and artist Eda Easton, whose artwork had also been removed, and agreed to work with the NCAC to create an official policy for displaying art in public buildings.
