Confronting Bodies: Louisiana state, To Kill a Mockingbird book

Description of Artwork: A classic novel by Harper Lee whose main themes involve racial injustice and the destruction of innocence.

The Incident: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee was re-banned in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana because of the use of the N-word in the novel. Parents complained about this offensive language and themes that were not suitable for children

Results of Incident: In the wake of the spurious ban’s revival, the Louisiana chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union called for it to be rescinded. There may in fact be reason for optimism, as the district is gathering a committee of students and employees to re-evaluate book selection and reconsider To Kill a Mockingbird amongst these books.
