Description of Artwork: Three Slick Pigs is an installation artwork. It consists of sculpture of 3 cartoon pigs wearing police shirts and badges, in a kick-line and situated in front of a massive black and white image of Minneapolis police in riot gear, which is spray painted with the letters "A.P.A.B."--an acronym for "All Police are Bastards" or "All Pigs Are Bastards."
The Incident: The artwork was included as part of the group exhibition “Street Legacy: So Cal Style Masters” featuring artwork from nearly 100 artists and taking place at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido (CCAE). The exhibition, co curated by Bobby Ruiz, C.E.O. and co-founder of Tribal Streetwear, and G. James Daichendt, professor of art history at Point Loma Nazarene University, highlights Southern California’s subcultures, including elements of lowrider, surf, skate, tattoo, and graffiti.
Some audience members, and members of local government, including Escondido City Council Member Michael Morasco and Mayor Paul McNamara, took issue with the sculpture on the grounds that it was offensive and anti-police.
Results of Incident: The Board of Directors of the CCAE decided to keep the work up.
