Location: Chile

Description of Artwork: The themes of his songs were about love, peace and social justice.

The Incident: Jara was convicted for his protest songs, policy positions and his work in literacy; he was arrested, tortured and shot to death with 44 bullet shots by machine gun fire, all within the first few days of the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.

Results of Incident: After his death the figure of Jara and his music were strictly prohibited. In 2009 his murderers were identified and brought to justice.
