Confronting Bodies: Currituck in North Carolina, A Bad Boy Can Be Good for a Girl

Description of Artwork: A Bad Boy Can Be Good For A Girl is the first novel by Tanya Lee Stone and written in a poetry-format, published by Random House Publishers in 2006. It follows the story of three girls who fall for the same bad boy intent on seducing every girl in school.

The Incident: A parent demanded that the novel be removed from the Currituck County High School library due to the explicit sexual content in the novel.

Results of Incident: Following the complaint, a high school review committee in June decided to keep the book. When Cooper appealed, a districtwide committee in July also agreed the book should stay.

"The complaint described the book as pornographic," the committee wrote. "We disagree strongly with this characterization. It would be inappropriate to remove the book because we may disagree with the morals, values or decisions of the characters in the book."
